Whale Shark Season 2025: Now Taking Reservations!

We’re officially open for 2025 bookings — and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome you back for another season of swimming with the gentle giants of the sea.

Before we dive in, we want to share a few important updates and some honest thoughts — because that’s how we’ve always done things here.

Why We’re Optimistic for 2025

We’re feeling good about this season. Really good.

Most natural cycles have highs and lows — some short, some long. Two years ago, we experienced one of the toughest seasons we’ve ever had in 19 years of running tours. July and August, usually the most reliable months, brought unexpectedly low shark numbers. We canceled many tours rather than send guests out with little chance of an encounter or add pressure to an already stressed environment. We didn’t know if it was a shift in weather, food supply, or something we were contributing to unknowingly — but it had us worried.

Thankfully, last year showed signs of recovery. Numbers improved, and while it still wasn’t the way it used to be, we were encouraged. This year, we’re optimistic. The ocean seems to be resetting. The energy is good, and we’re hopeful that the sharks will show up in strong numbers — and that we’ll be there to respectfully share the water with them.

A Quieter Island, A Unique Opportunity

This year, Isla Mujeres is experiencing lower tourism overall — something we haven’t seen since before COVID. While that’s a challenge for the island, it may be a gift for the whale sharks. Fewer boats on the water could mean less disruption — and potentially a more peaceful experience for the animals and for those lucky enough to swim alongside them.

We’ve always said we’d be upfront about the realities of the season. We won’t make promises we can’t keep. But we can promise this: your safety comes first, the sharks’ well-being is right there with it, and creating an unforgettable, respectful experience is what we strive for every single day.

When Does the Season Start?

While the official whale shark season begins on May 15, we won’t start running tours until June 1. Why? In those early days of the season, the number of whale sharks is usually quite low. Rather than adding another boat to the mix and putting additional stress on the few sharks that have arrived, we hold off. Our commitment has always been — and will always be — to the well-being of both the whale sharks and our guests.

Even in early June, conditions can be unpredictable. Weather plays a big role. Rough seas not only make the trip uncomfortable, they can create dangerous conditions for swimmers, crew, and even the whale sharks themselves. If the ocean isn’t safe or the experience wouldn’t be enjoyable, we simply won’t go out.
